DBRC Aims & Activities

Thanks to our sponsor, the Spencer Foundation, the Design-Based Research Collective was able to host several working meetings in the spring and summer of 2001. With the input of our advisory board and the consulting scholars, we have drafted two manuscripts on methodological issues in design-based research. These manuscripts are still in revision and will be posted here as soon as they are completed.

Our group has three primary goals. First, we hope to contribute to the evolution of design-based research methods; by examining the philosophical, epistemological, and practical implications of these methods, we hope to improve the state of the art and the ability of design-based research to figure into the national and global dialogue on education. Second, we hope to raise awareness about issues related to design and design-based research among not only educators, learning scientists, and educational researchers, but also among other social scientists and designers. Third, we aim to improve our own design-based work through mutual support and critique.

A subset of our group presented work done using design-based research methods at the Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association in April, 2002 in New Orleans.
